Before you enroll

Questions from parents.

Does my current 8th grader need to apply?

Current PGCPS 8th graders do not fill out an application. PGCPS considers every current PGCPS 8th grader automatically, as long as the student has taken the PSAT 8/9. Current PGCPS 9th graders and 8th or 9th graders who attend a school outside PGCPS must apply. Families apply through the PGCPS application process and need a PGCPS student information number.

Is there an entrance exam?

A student's eligibility is based on two things: the PSAT 8/9 score and the grade point average (GPA). Every applicant must take the PSAT 8/9. There is no separate Science and Technology entrance exam in the published materials.

How is the GPA calculated?

The GPA comes from quarter grades in English, math, science and social studies. It uses all four quarters of the previous school year and the first quarter of the current school year.

Can we choose between Roosevelt, Flowers and Oxon Hill?

A student can only attend the Science and Technology site that serves the family's legal address. Placement among the three sites follows the student's boundary zip code. Only students who live within the northern boundary of PGCPS are admitted to Eleanor Roosevelt. Families can check their address in the PGCPS School Finder.

What if my student is not accepted?

A student who is not accepted as a freshman can retake the PSAT 8/9 and reapply. For reapplicants entering Grade 9, the unweighted core GPA and the PSAT 8/9 score are used to calculate the total score. Grade 10 openings are limited. Applicants for Grade 10 must apply and compete for the spots that are open.

When do families hear back?

The PGCPS Testing Office sends decisions in early March. PGCPS says specialty program notifications can arrive between March and May.

Is transportation provided?

PGCPS provides transportation for registered Science and Technology students.
